Pentax K-3 II

The Pentax K-3 II D-SLR adds some features to its predecessor, including an in-camera GPS, but does so at the cost of the built-in flash.

Affordable. Solid, weather-sealed design. 24-megapixel image sensor omits OLPF. 27-point AF system. In-camera shake reduction. Pixel Shift Resolution shooting mode improves detail. OLPF simulation mode. 8fps shooting rate. In-camera GPS. Pentaprism...

Omits in-camera flash. Astrotracer function is hit or miss. Burst rate slows when tracking focus is enabled. Lacks in-camera Wi-Fi. Disappointing video features.

Conclusions The Pentax K-3 II is an interesting, but somewhat puzzling, update to the original K-3. It retains a lot of what I loved about the K-3, including its stellar build quality, superb control layout, weather-sealed design, and access to a...

Pentax K-3 II Review

The Pentax K-3 II is a new semi-professional DSLR camera with several new eye-catching technologies. Key features of the K-3 II include a 24 megapixel APS-C sensor with an anti-aliasing simulator rather than an optical anti-aliasing filter, Pixel Shift...

The Pentax K-3 II is a fairly minor update of the excellent K-3 camera, principally adding the innovative Pixel Shift Resolution technology, an improved anti-shake system, Diffraction Correction, and built-in GPS (albeit at the expense of the pop-up...

Pentax K-3 II Review

The Pentax K-3 II keeps almost everything we loved from the superb K-3, then replaces the popup flash with an in-camera GPS -- not just for automatic geotagging, but also for freezing star-trails in astrophotography. As if that wasn't cool enough, its...

Top-notch image quality; Spectacular detail from Pixel Shift Resolution; Better performance than K-3; Geotag images with no accessories; Great ergonomics in a compact body; Clever on-demand low-pass filtering; Broad sensitivity range; Large and bright...

No built-in flash strobe; No wireless flash support out of the box; AstroTracer function can be finicky; AE Lock button is poorly located; Below-average battery life for a prosumer DSLR; Requires a different battery grip accessory than its predecessors

The Pentax K-3 II keeps almost everything we loved from the superb K-3, then replaces the popup flash with an in-camera GPS -- not just for automatic geotagging, but also for freezing star-trails in astrophotography. As if that wasn't cool enough, its...

Review: Pentax K-3 II offers useful new features

The Pentax K-3 II is the latest flagship DSLR from Ricoh and one which, on paper, offers a number of interesting upgrades over its predecessors. We recently spent a couple of weeks with the surprisingly compact DSLR to see if features including an...

. Next year we’re due to see the launch of a full-frame Pentax DSLR, but until then this crop sensor DSLR is where we get to see the headline features doing their thing.

Camera Review: Ricoh Pentax K-3 II

The Pentax K-3 II's shifting sensor and GPS unit can sync with the rotation of the Earth to keep stars prickly-sharp during longer exposures.

Sturdy, weather-sealed build; ample external controls; dual card slots; AA filter simulation mode; intuitive menu system; great value

Video features lacking; no touchscreen or tilting display; no Wi-Fi; no real-time exposure preview

If you own a K-3, it’s tough to say the addition of features like GPS and Pixel Shift Resolution are must-haves worthy of an upgrade. With an identical sensor, similar AF speeds with older lenses and similar burst modes, buffer and battery life, the...

Pentax K-3 II

The Pentax K-3 II is a high-end APS-C 24-megapixel DSLR, the last stop before you end up in full-frame sensor territory. It arrives two years after its predecessor, and while several of its core features seem similar, it improves a few important areas...

Excellent OIS ; Good dynamic range and detail ; Unusual feature set

No Wi-Fi or NFC ; A little large and heavy ; Flawed JPEG processing

Pentax K-3 II review

It's tough, fast and powerful, and Pentax's new DSLR is aimed at adventurers

Pixel Shift high-res shooting mode ; Solid build ; Intuitive controls and menus ; Excellent image quality

No touchscreen or vari-angle screen ; No built-in Wi-Fi ; Noisy autofocusing ; Only modest improvements over the K-3

Pentax's Pixel Shift Technology and similar high-res shooting modes will have their day, but they're not yet sufficiently advanced to make this a must-have feature. That aside, the K-3 II is a capable and well-specced enthusiast DSLR.

Pentax K-3 II review

The K-3 II is unapologetically different from most cameras, for better and worse

Excellent build quality ; Takes great photos ; Built-in stabilisation ; Astrotracer and GPS

No flip-out LCD or Wi-Fi ; Average video options ; Sometimes a little slow

It's not quite a do-it-all DSLR legend, but if you're looking for a camera that does a few unusual things very well, look no further
